[Rhizomatica #1: Inhabiting Paradox] is an [in-person], experimental, nomadic, performance residency lab led by Estrellx Supernova that centers the healing arts, choreographic excavation, and ritualistic cartographies. Estrellx is seeking to work w/ (5- 13) [BIQTPOC and Allied Creatives*], in each of the following locations, who are interested in crafting performative interventions, digging into durational movement and endurance art practices, ritual, somatic installations, and having conversations around urgent, global, systemic issues. How can pleasure, embodied kinetics and choreographic acts support us with co-creating a regenerative future?

Each cycle will require a minimum of (5) participants to run and will be a unique opportunity to come undone, have heart-centered dialogue, cross-pollinate between practices, beliefs, methodologies, and get creatively messy / inspired. The intention is to cultivate and allow the force of quebrantamiento** to flow through our bodies creating space for transmutation, renewal and rebirth. This container is set w/ the ethos that we are already whole and that allopathic approaches to our individual and collective issues require major redesigning. My intention is to engender intimate constellations of care where we balance resting, moving, dreaming, awakening, [alone, and together].

Estrellx will also make themselves available to work with folks 1:1 (during or after a respective residency cycle) as an intuitive coach or somatic / erotic touch practitioner (in each respective location) for folks within and outside of the residency constellations so if working 1:1  is more your jam than the collective context, please go here for more info and message Estrellx directly to work with them in this capacity.

This performance lab is for BIQTPOC and Allied Creatives who:

  • have a strong creative practice in the dance/choreographic/movement realms and spiritual foundation (whatever that may be, however that manifests for you, whatever medium(s)/lineages you are currently busy with or are just beginning to plant the seeds for);

  • for non-dancers/choreographers/artists who reside in other fields and sectors (i.e. architecture, neuroscience, business) that are interested in engaging with embodiment, healing, choreography, ritual;

  • are interested in working autonomously and in collaboration with others;

  • want to integrate more healing and embodiment into their lives and repertoire of knowledge;

  • are emerging, established, and anywhere in between or off the spectrum all together;

  • are seeking an intentional, rigorous, and committed network of care to be supported by in this time of global transition;

  • are calling in collective healing, accountability structures, reciprocity, pleasure, cross-pollination, liberation;

  • are calling in growth and empowerment on all levels and more specifically through working with voice, choreography, and ritual;

  • are yearning to experiment with creating alternative structures in relation to time, productivity, and being;

  • are seeking to co-create spaces of being in right relation to self, Earth, community, and ancestors as a life-long, ongoing practice;

  • who feel or have never felt [insert identity label or term here]-enough. You are abundant and you are welcome here, exactly as you are!

  • who battle w/ the internal tension created by the reality that some of us have "colonized/colonizer" blood running through our veins.

  • **Note on how Estrellx is considering / defining Allyship/Ally**:

    If you are applying to one of these containers, there is an expectation that you already possess a critical and rigorous understanding of how your identities and positionalities intersect with power, privilege, class, gender (and any other intersections that are important to YOU within this ontology, reality, paradigm) and how your actions (or lack thereof) impact everyone around you, oftentimes disproportionately. This is NOT a space that will be centering whiteness or undoing/unlearning white supremacy even though this space does acknowledge that colonialism is an insidious energy that is impacting ALL of us, even when we are ALL impacted to different degrees and scales. This will be a space that holds multiple truths and centers simultaneously and that invites the possibility that even though we might not all agree, we all deserve to thrive and have access to the resources that we need to heal.  This will be a space to wrestle with our individual and collective conditioning and will not tolerate any -ism or -phobia. We are not striving for perfection here, however, we are striving to activate and cultivate a space where generative dissonance, humility, and cultural competency are uplifted, through and beyond the body, where it is possible to ask the hard questions knowing that there will never be a singular answer or one pathway that serves us all, where we can ask nuanced questions that generate currents of reciprocal exchange.  We will engender more apertures and give space to what needs to be named. Finally, this space is set with the intention to uplift the voices and presences of BIQTPOC Creatives, period, so if you are an ally that is applying, please be sure that you are down with this vibe.

 Opening Circle/Session #1: Welcoming Ritual / Introduction (includes setting intentions, naming desires, goals, and wishes for the container)

Session #2 - #5 : Daily shape-shifting workshop sessions, where we will investigate the theme of Inhabiting Paradox, particularly by examining the way in which contradictory and complex systems, beliefs, and patterns tether and manifest through our individual and collective bodies.

Other Foci / Hot Topics include:

- healing ecologies
- the erotic as grounding force
- grief work
- site specific practice / interventions

- approaches to choreography, ritual, and performance

Session #6 - #9: We continue to engage in daily shape-shifting workshop sessions, expanding on the aforementioned themes and go deeper by beginning to witness and perform for one another, the Earth, unseen audiences.

Session #10 || Accumulation, Performance Offering, Closing Circle / Celebration (this will be a time to express gratitude, reveal what we have been devising individually and collectively, and celebrate with some sweet tunes, libations, and treats)

Please Note: We will work approximately 3-6 hours per day during the weekdays, Monday-Friday, with the weekends off for resting and integration. The application contains a question where you can designate the ideal timeframe that would work for you for attending the sessions since some folks will inevitably have conflicting work schedules. I want to ensure to schedule the sessions when the most folks can be present and without conflicts!

[Rhizomatica #1: Inhabiting Paradox]  is an [in-person], [healing and embodiment], [choreography and performance as ritual] residency program seeking to bring together local cohorts of Black, Indigenous, Queer, and Trans (BIQTPOC) and Allied artists, activists, healers, herbalists, writers, thinkers, choreographers, and dancers. We will gather and through embodied practice, see what wants to emerge from our collective energy.

These initial iterations of [Rhizomatica] will directly investigate the theme of Inhabiting Paradox, particularly by examining the way in which contradictory and complex systems, beliefs, and patterns tether and manifest through our individual and collective bodies. Other foci of interest include: healing ecologies, the erotic as grounding force, grief work, socially-engaged praxis, and approaches to choreography, ritual, and performance. Transmissions through the form of shape-shifting workshops or sessions will be designed to complement, challenge, and expand the breadth of knowledge that cohort members already possess.

There will be time to rest, integrate, research, expand gestures of care, and practice practice practice performing, integration, setting boundaries, experimenting, and making mistakes. There will be a low-key culminating performative event(s) at the end of our time together, however, the emphasis will be on remaining present, in the moment, and challenging ourselves to expand the range of our comfort zone with and without witnesses present.

Please Note:

- If accepted into the residency, full participation and commitment to the schedule is required due to the curatorial design of this program. Of course, if emergencies arise we will remain open and in dialogue with you to support you.

- International/ Non-Local Applicants: You may apply, but you will need to cover your own transportation, housing, and food costs (in addition to the tuition) to attend the residency!

- If you have any questions or concerns, please email Estrellx at

The individual cost to participate in this experimental performance lab is tiered, sliding scale, and based on your personal revenue, resource, cash flow. This cost = the tuition for the entire timeframe of the performance lab!

If you have questions about how to assess, which tier is aligned for you go here:

Tier 1: [$111 - $222]

Tier 2: [$333 - $666]

Tier 3: [$777 - $999]

  • If you wish to drop-in to a single day, classes are $50-75/individual workshop session.

  • There will be (1-2) Work Exchange Positions (WEX) available per location where you can attend the workshop sessions for free in exchange for supporting Estrellx with administrative and dramaturgical tasks that arise prior to and during the respective sessions. You can provide more information in the application if a WEX position is of interest to you!

  • If you're an ALLY w/ extra resources and want to sponsor the presence of a BIQTPOC Creative as a form of reparations, please contact Estrellx directly @

  • Due to the nature of the program and the labor that goes into curation, facilitation, design of this performance lab, the cost of the performance lab will remain the same if we are forced to pivot to fully virtual. 50% of total tuition is due upon accepting a spot in the performance lab (non-refundable) and the remainder is due by the first date of the opening session (refundable).

We are aware that these times require extra care and patience as we move with and through the onslaught of the variants of COVID-19.

Because of this, the choreographic propositions will oscillate between indoor and outdoor spaces and we will use choreographic strategies to move and be with the trouble of this present moment.

- If you are already vaccinated, and haven't received your booster PLEASE go and do that ASAP!

- Everyone will be required to wear masks indoors and outdoors and you must agree to take a PCR test on the following dates, whether you are or aren't vaccinated:

Jan. 27 - Jan. 28: PCR Test #1 (results to be emailed to Estrellx or brought to lab on Jan. 31)
Feb. 5 - Feb. 6: PCR Test #2 (results to be emailed to Estrellx or brought to lab on Feb. 7)
Feb. 12 - Feb. 13: PCR Test #3 (results to be communicated to Estrellx / cohort on Feb. 14)
Feb. 18 - 19: PCR Test #4 (optional / best to do this to ensure the safety of any folks within your own circles)

Here is a link to free testing sites in LA for you to book your tests!

- Stomping Ground LA WILL require and check vaccination cards, for those who are able to access the vaccine, so make sure you have the physical and/or electronic version ready to go each day!

- For those with genetic and/or religious exemptions who cannot get vaccinated Stomping Ground LA does "accept a written form of exemption and a negative PCR test in lieu of vaccination."

You can access the full protocol and dos/don'ts of Stomping Ground LA here if that is of interest to you.

- Please make sure to bring your own masks, water bottles, tupperware and utensils! Estrellx will bring extra masks just in case.

- You will be asked to sign a contract and liability waiver upon acceptance to this residency that outlines these stipulations, payment due dates, and other related information.

If someone in the cohort does contract COVID-19 or tests positive while we are in space together, we will:

1.) do a check-in to assess comfort levels with continuing the residency [virtually and IRL] or [shifting to fully virtual until all PCR results are in] or [fully outdoors] to honor comfort levels;

2.) commit to the PCR test schedule outlined in the application form to support the well-being of the cohort / pod.

Additional Info:

Please make sure to bring your own masks, water bottles, tupperware and utensils!

Due to the in-person nature of [Rhizomatica], Estrellx will be working with each specific venue to discern the respective COVID-19 Protocol. What Estrellx is personally imagining is that folks in the space are either fully vaccinated (w/ or without the most recent booster shot) AND/OR if you have specific religious or other personal exemption reasons for why you cannot get vaccinated then showing a negative COVID-19 PCR test on the first day of the residency lab that is taken at least 72 hours before the first session will suffice.

If you are someone who is not willing to be in a space with an individual who is unvaccinated, then it is up to you to decide whether or not to be present in this space. As we have seen in many cases, folks who are vaccinated are still contracting COVID-19 and its accompanying variants so the best practice if and when we are indoors with a large group is to remain masked. Depending on the cohort size and who shows up in the respective space, I will hold a conversation at the intro meeting to discuss this and any additional accessibility needs to support the overall cohesion of the group.

Additionally you will be asked to sign off on a waiver / consent form that acknowledges the pandemic reality we are in, confirms your participation, and ensures I/The School of Tenderness are not liable if you were to contract COVID-19 while working together.

If someone in the cohort does contract COVID-19, one of two things will happen:

1.) we will ALL get tested and pivot fully towards a virtual model

2.) we will ALL get tested, pivot towards a virtual model until all the results are in, and then pivot back to an IRL / outdoor format

Please make sure to bring your own masks, water bottles, tupperware and utensils!

All of this will have to be verified with each respective venue location so please stay tuned for all updates upon your acceptance to the respective performance lab cycle.
